The Take on Giving

If you visited a Sprouts store in October, then there's a pretty good chance you participated in our fundraising campaign for autism awareness. An astounding 230,000 customers made a donation at the registers and, combined with the contributions that came in from our vendors and business partners, that resulted in a total donation of more than $1 million to Autism Speaks and the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center. For that, we are profoundly grateful.

This was more than just a "cause marketing" effort. It's something we believe in from the bottoms of our hearts — in part because the President of Sprouts, Doug Sanders, has a son who has been diagnosed with autism, but also because of the reported links between diet and autism (either as cause or as part of a targeted treatment regimen). We are deeply moved by the letters and emails that we get from customers who express their appreciation for our dedication to selling gluten-free and other special diet products. And there have been more of these letters every month — further evidence of a profound health problem in our society.

Grab & GiveThis month, we shift our community efforts in a different direction. The Grab 'N Give campaign, which enables you to purchase a pre-filled bag of discounted groceries for about $10 and donate it to a local food bank (through us, or by dropping it off yourself), is a program that was enormously successful at Henry's over the past couple of years, and has now been extended to all of Sprouts since the two companies merged. Supporting food banks and pantries is not a glamorous cause, but it is incredibly important because hunger is a growing problem. There is ample evidence right in our backyard: St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, the nation's first food bank, is located in Sprouts' hometown of Phoenix, AZ, and is now providing food for about 275,000 meals a day.

We know times are still tough, and that one of the main reasons you shop at Sprouts is to save money. We don't want to overwhelm you with requests for charitable donations. But we certainly hope you will see it in your heart to "Grab 'N Give" next time you are in the store.
From Soup to Nuts at Pacific Foods
Pacific Natural FoodsSo just exactly how many bites of grass does a dairy cow take each day? 32,000, give or take. The good folks at Pacific Natural Foods know this because they have strapped wireless ankle bracelet transmitters to each member of their herd, enabling the farmers to monitor the animals' health, grazing patterns and milk production. Take a fascinating trip down to the farm with us, as we profile this highly respected manufacturer of non-dairy beverages, soups and broths, their love for animals and organic farming, and their incredibly inspirational founder, Chuck Eggert. And, after you use the coupon at right for your FREE package of Pacific Natural Foods Pho Soup Starter, don't forget to watch the behind-the-scenes video we produced during our trip to Pacific's farms and production facilities in Oregon.
Slick Oil
Slick Oil
These days, most grocery store shelves — Sprouts included — are laden with dozens of different cooking oils. Each one has a distinct flavor characteristic, nutritional value and intended use. There are oils ideal for deep frying, sautéing, drizzling and flavoring; but deciphering which is which can get a little confusing. Click here for a primer that might have you going in for an oil change.
Thanksgiving 101 — and 201
Thanksgiving 101 — and 201
It's Thanksgiving... showtime for the meal of the year. But since this holiday features some items that you don't typically prepare on "the other 364," we thought it would be an ideal time to collect some prep tips to help you with the harder holiday tasks: carving a turkey, making cranberry sauce, perfecting a pie crust, mashing sweet potatoes, and cooking parsnips. Plus, for the more experienced cooks out there, we also offer an advanced course in each of these products, with some modern twists. Read more.

But this year, we are going to really lay on the charm in the hope that you'll bring us home for Thanksgiving to meet your family. We have a full complement of fresh free-range turkeys/fantastic pre-cooked meals/fresh produce/party trays/all-natural packaged goods/bulk baking essentials/scrumptious pies and desserts/kitchen gadgets — and at prices that will almost make us feel like a cheap date. Lilly Sour Cream: One-Ingredient Wonder
Lilly Sour Cream: One-Ingredient WonderIf you could somehow magically go back to your grandmother's kitchen and peer inside the avocado-colored "icebox," you would have found pure and simple dairy products that had probably been delivered by the milkman. Over the last few decades, avocado color fell out of favor, the icebox transformed into a stainless steel command center with an in-door water dispenser, and those pure dairy products... well, when the milkman went away, so did they. Today, it's not unusual to find ingredients in your dairy products like maltodextrin, xanthan gum and modified food starch. Whatever they are. But one brand, Lilly, has brought the good old times back — and their one-ingredient, European-style sour cream is a smash hit. Read more of this sweet sour cream story... and be sure to redeem your attached coupon for a FREE pint before November 20!

New for You at Sprouts
•   It's peak season for apples, and many Sprouts stores are now carrying as many as 17 different varieties, both conventional and organic. In Arizona, California and Colorado, look for three terrific apples from New York State: the Empire, the Rome, and the Eastern McIntosh. And in every store, Honeycrisps are in strong supply and have been one of the year's best sellers.
Sprouts Coconut Water •   If that makes you pine for apples, then you might also want to consider pineapples — which are fantastic right now. Normally, pineapples have a brix, or sugar content rating, of 8-10; some of the pineapples we have gotten in over the past couple of weeks have had a brix of 18. Sweet!
•   Sprouts Coconut Water was just introduced a couple of weeks ago, and has already surged to become the single best-selling product in our Grocery aisles. (Good thing coconut trees bloom up to 13 times a year!) As we've chronicled in past articles, coconut water has many nutritional benefits, including high levels of antioxidants and potassium, and has become the darling of the treadmill crowd.
•   One of the best things to come out of the merger between Henry's and Sprouts was... pies. Henry's has long had a terrific selection of pies, and now ALL Sprouts stores do. Look for pumpkin, apple, cherry, blueberry, strawberry-rhubarb, key lime, coconut crème and many more. They are all made with tender, flaky crusts and no trans fats... and at prices ranging from $2.99 to $5.99 they are an outstanding value.
•   TofurkyOver in the Frozen Department, look for Arctic Zero Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream (with only 150 calories per pint). Also on ice, you'll find holiday roasts from Tofurky for the vegetarians and vegans at your Thanksgiving table.
Shamrock Eggnog •   Jared, our Dairy Buyer, is excited for the holidays because they signal the arrival of eggnog — and plenty of it. Enjoy a rich and creamy taste of Shamrock Farms Eggnog, available in 32 ounces (either regular or low-fat). We also have Organic Valley Eggnog, and in some stores you might find still more brands, such as Horizon or Broguiere's.
•   If you're in a crunchy mood instead, snarf down a handful of Popcorn Indiana's Indulgence flavors, available for a limited time: Dark Fudge Chocolate Chip Kettlecorn, Drizzled Black & White Kettlecorn, Drizzled Cinnamon Sugar Kettlecorn, and Carmel Popcorn. Or try the holiday edition of some of your all-time favorite snacks, like Stacy's Classic Cocoa or Simply Gingerbread Pita Chips, or winter-inspired Terra Chips in Cinnamon Spice, Sweet Potato Nutmeg, or Cinnamon Apple Sweet Potato.
•   Blender BottlesBlender Bottles are certainly the most versatile item in the Vitamin Department. Available in two sizes, each for $6.99 through Thanksgiving, these clever devices are great for mixing up everything from smoothies to salad dressing to pancake batter to scrambled eggs. (And when you use them to make pudding, they make a sound that will make your kids laugh.)
new website •   Our new website is slated to launch in late December. It will be a vast improvement over the late 20th Century model we currently have (which is actually only five years old), with electronic coupons, mobile accessibility, a video gallery, and a whole raft of cool new features coming in 2012.
•   You can find frequent updates, specials and Sprouts deals online at sprouts.com, Facebook
and Twitter. More than 40,000 people have joined the Sprouts community on Facebook.
The items above can be found at most Sprouts locations. Inventory may vary. Subject to availability.
